A Corpus Linguistic Analysis of Translations of Poe's "The Raven":
A Comparative Study of Mir Alaei and Choobak
Abstract
This study conducts a corpus linguistic analysis of two prominent Persian translations of Poe’s “The Raven”, specifically the translations by Mir Ala’i and Choobak. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the analysis examines the differences in lexical, syntactic, and thematic elements between the two translations to determine how each translator has interpreted Poe’s original poem. Using a corpus-based methodology, this research aims to shed light on the impact of translators’ strategic choices on the emotional and stylistic fidelity to the source text. The findings reveal quite distinct translation processes that reflect the cultural contexts and philosophical approaches to literary interpretation adopted by each translator. Furthermore, this study deepens the understanding of the challenges inherent in poetry translation—due to the complexities of language, rhythm, and meaning in the original text—and demonstrates the application of corpus linguistics for the systematic comparison of texts.
