Typological Analysis of Adverbs of Manner in English and Persian

Abstract

Typological studies have been done for all groups of word classes such as adjectives, verbs and adverbs. The present research aimed to study the adverbs of manner in English and their corresponding translations in Persian following on Loeb-Diehl (2005). She had studied manner expressions in 120 world languages and placed them into 10 strategies. English and Persian were among the languages of her study. To start our data collection, we identified adverbs of manner in the first ten chapters of the Wuthering Heights novel. After that, we discovered the related sentences and adverbs in Persian. We chose four translators and compared their translations with the English language. Finally, we put all the Persian and English data in the proper tables. According to our studies, ADV strategies were translated into ADV strategies in most cases. Also, PP strategies in English were most often translated into PP strategies in Persian. The last strategy was ADJ-IMPERSO. In case we ignore the fact that in this strategy the subjects were the same, then we can say it had translated into ADJ. IMPERSO in Persian. It should also be noted that all the strategies in English were translated to other groups, too. Consequently, we cannot assert that all English strategies were translated into all the strategies used in Persian. Therefore, we can't expect every English strategy to have a corresponding strategy in Persian.
