The Translation of Classic Romantic Novels Before and After the Iranian Islamic Revolution:
Insights from the Lexical-Semantic Level of Garces' (1994) Model
Abstract
This study examined translations by thirteen translators of the romantic novels "Rebecca," "Pride and Prejudice," and "Wuthering Heights," focusing on the pre- and post-revolution periods of Islamic Iran and based on the lexical-semantic level of Garces' (1994) model. This research aimed to identify whether differences exist in relation to cultural changes and to determine the extent of these differences. Another question was which group of translators has been more faithful to the source text. In this context, romantic words were extracted, examined, and analyzed based on Chapman’s classification (2014) and with the help of artificial intelligence. The frequency of each technique used in each translation was obtained and then compared separately with the results of other translators for the same work. It was revealed that post-revolution translations have aligned more with global culture while preserving the structures of the source text and translators have cherished the source text more, whereas pre-revolution translations placed greater emphasis on the target culture.
